Well-being is complex, including physical, mental, financial, spiritual, and family health; it is, therefore, difficult for enterprises to support it adequately and comprehensively. Another complicating factor is that the lived reality of executives is often far from that of the employees; hence many executives are not even aware of the well-being crises their staff are struggling with – particularly financial issues. A third complicating factor is that there is much concern by human resource professionals about straying over the boundaries of personal choice. For example, providing fitness classes and supportive messages about healthy habits, healthy weight, and diet might seem positive but may negatively impact the mental well-being and the sense of inclusion of employees who are obese or otherwise unable or unwilling to participate. While companies can adopt multiple programmes, seeking to support workers with any and each of the separate areas cited above, the core approach of the enterprise should be to adopt human-centred workforce management,55 which is the focus of Chapter 10 in my book Management and Leadership in the 4th Industrial Revolution. I draw the following extracts from that book.

Klaus Schwab (Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum)56 described the 4th Industrial Revolution as being ‘more than just technology-driven change; it is an opportunity […] to harness converging technologies to create an inclusive, human-centred future’. It is increasingly accepted that enterprise performance depends on worker well-being – and this requires explicit investment and management.

• The World Health Organisation names an ‘epidemic of stress’57 that is spreading across populations of workers in developed countries.
